5.1.3 Microelectronics and VLSI Design

Microelectronics is a field of specialization and VLSI is a process under this specialization. VLSI design deals with “design for VLSI”, it could be analog, digital, mixed-signal, etc, which is again a process under Microelectronics. Microelectronics tends to focus on a circuit that is developed for a specific purpose, while very large systems integration (VLSI) tends to focus on integrated many circuits to perform a more difficult or more general purpose.

An example of a microelectronic would be an accelerometer that uses electronic tunneling to output a voltage based on acceleration. An example of a VLSI would be the microcontroller that is used to interpret and utilize the accelerometer signal.
